Women of Flesh and Steel

Women’s representation in Science Fiction movies and television series has grown since Uhura’s first appearance in Star Trek in the 1960s and female protagonists and supportive characters have gained ground in the recent decades.

Women of Flesh and Steel compiles essays about a wide range of significant characters from Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise to Mako Mori in Pacific Rim, and many other women on the small screen such as heroines from Babylon 5 to the reimagined Battlestar Galactica.

While tokenization and patriarchal stereotypes are hard to rid popular culture from, this collection of essays written across a decade, dives into female characters that improved representation, which benefit all viewers, regardless of their gender.
